How it works
Every storefront text in Alva Courses has a built-in default in 35 languages. Text you set for All languages replaces the default in every language. Text you set for one language wins over All languages text in that language, so “Courses” can become “Workshops” in English while French visitors keep their own wording.
Labels you set on a course still win over this page: the teacher badge, block button labels and quiz titles. In checkout and customer accounts, the thank-you block's button text setting and each course's offer label win too.
Where your text appears
Your text can replace the defaults in four places:
- Storefront course player: every screen, from the course list and My Learning to lessons, quizzes, comments, the contact form and course completion.
- Checkout thank-you page: the Alva Courses block shown after payment.
- Order status page: the course link and banner in customer accounts.
- Customer account: My Courses: the page title, buttons and messages.
Shopify's own checkout and account text, emails, certificates and the way dates and numbers are formatted can't be changed here.
How to change storefront text
1. Open the storefront text editor
In your Shopify admin, open Alva Courses → Settings → Appearance. In the Customize Login section, click Edit storefront text. The Storefront text page opens.
2. Choose a language
Pick All languages or one of the 35 languages from the Language menu. Labels such as store language, used by a course and seen recently point to the languages your customers use. The editor opens on your store-wide Course Viewer Language if you set one, otherwise on All languages.
3. Find the text
Type in Search to find a text by its wording or key, or set Show to Customised to list only text you have changed. Click a group, such as Course list, Quizzes or Customer account: My Courses, to expand it.
4. Type your wording
Each field shows the built-in text as Default, plus the English text when you edit another language. Keep any placeholder listed under Keep, such as {{count}}, so the value still shows. Leave a field empty to use the default. Line breaks are saved as spaces.
5. Preview your draft
Click Preview draft to open your storefront in a new tab with your unsaved text. Previewing one language shows the course player in that language. Anyone with the link can see the preview for 30 minutes. Checkout and customer account text isn't part of the preview.
6. Save
Click Save in the save bar, or Discard to drop your edits. Saved text shows on the next storefront page load, and View on storefront opens it. If you switch language with unsaved edits, Alva Courses asks you to save or discard them first.
Reset text to the default
Click Reset to default under a field to go back to the built-in text. On a language that inherits All languages text, the button reads Use All languages text. Use Reset this group inside a group, or the Reset all text in button for the selected language, to clear more at once.
Resets wait in the save bar, so you can still discard them. Once saved, a reset can't be undone, so export a copy first if you might need your text again.
Translate your text into other languages
Select a language and type that language's wording. Until you do, customers browsing in it see your All languages text or the built-in default. To start from your All languages text, click Copy All languages text into the selected language, edit the copies, then save. To translate many texts at once, see Import and export storefront text as CSV.
Text you set under Customize Login
Before the storefront text editor, Alva Courses let you change nine course list and course page texts in a Customize Login window. That text now sits under All languages and still shows in every language. A Some text shows in every language banner reminds you. To translate it, select a language and set that language's own text.
Text rules and limits
- Each text can be up to 500 characters.
- HTML isn't supported. Text shows exactly as typed, so
<and>aren't allowed. - You can only use the placeholders the default text uses. Leaving one out is allowed, but its value won't show.
- A warning appears when your text is much longer than the default and may not fit the layout.
- Each store can hold 256 KB of custom text across all languages, enough for several complete translations.
What learners see
Students see your wording wherever the default text appeared, in the language the course player or Shopify shows them. In checkout and customer accounts your text loads with the Alva Courses block, so the default wording can show for a moment first.
Common questions
Does storefront text translate my course content?
No. Storefront text changes the course player's interface and the Alva Courses blocks in checkout and customer accounts. Course titles, lesson names and lesson content always show exactly as you wrote them, whatever language the customer browses in.
Which language does a customer see my text in?
The course player shows the text for the language it is displayed in, which follows your storefront language unless you force one. Text set for that language wins, then text set for All languages, then the built-in default for that language.
Who can see a draft preview?
Anyone who has the preview link, for 30 minutes after you create it. Your saved storefront text doesn't change, so customers without the link keep seeing your saved wording.
Can I undo a reset?
Before you save, yes: click Discard in the save bar and your text comes back. After you save there is no history to restore from, so export the language first if you might need the text again.
