Alva Courses is a Shopify app that builds, sells and delivers online courses inside a Shopify store, with quizzes, manual grading and certificates built in. Alva Courses also publishes this comparison, so its criteria and sources are stated openly.
It is written for merchants whose courses end in an assessment: trainers issuing certificates, educators marking written work and CPD providers. It covers Shopify-native apps, then when a standalone LMS fits better.
Alva Courses is the publisher's own product, and every claim about it was checked in its code and help centre. Competitor claims come from App Store listings, vendor websites and help centres read on 8 October 2026. "Not documented" means those pages are silent, not that a feature is missing.
What to check in a Shopify app for assessed courses
An assessed course needs more than a quiz block. Check which question types an app supports, whether a person can mark written answers, how pass marks and attempt limits work, what feedback students receive, whether the next lesson can wait for a pass, and whether the certificate can wait for a pass and print a grade.
- Quizzes: question types, automatic marking, a pass mark, attempt limits, time limits and feedback after each answer.
- Grading: manual marking of written answers, a course-level review before completion, and grade scales.
- Progression: locking the next lesson until a quiz is passed, so nobody reaches the certificate by skipping the test.
- Certificates: design control, automatic issue, a printed grade, per-course designs, email delivery and verification.
- Automation and price: quiz triggers for Shopify automation, SCORM, and the lowest plan that includes it all.
Feature matrix: four Shopify course apps on assessment
The matrix compares Alva Courses, Courses Plus, Tevello and Inflowkit on every criterion above, as of October 2026. Alva Courses entries are verified in the product. Competitor entries come from each vendor's App Store listing, website and help centre; "not documented" means their public pages do not say either way.

Alva Courses: quizzes, written-work grading and graded certificates
Alva Courses covers most of the assessment chain in one Shopify app: auto-marked and written quiz questions, a review queue for written answers, a course-level evaluation step, per-course grade scales and certificates that can print the grade. All of it is on both plans, from $9.99 a month, and the gaps are listed at the end.
The quiz block
A quiz is a content block inside a lesson. Each question is Multiple Choice (one or several correct options), Short Answer or Long Answer, and carries its own points. Multiple-choice questions are marked automatically the moment the student submits.
Settings include a Passing Score (%) (70 by default), an optional time limit in minutes, Max Attempts (unlimited unless you set a number) and shuffled questions and answers.
With Show correct answers after each question on, students also see the explanation you wrote for the option they chose and, after a wrong answer, for the correct one. Placement advice is in add quizzes and assessments to a Shopify course.
Written answers, evaluation and grade scales
Short and long answers wait under Review Responses on the course page. You award points per answer, partial credit included, and write feedback the student sees with their result. Another setting makes students wait for your mark before the lesson completes.
For a whole-course verdict, turn on Require manual evaluation before completion. Submitted work freezes and joins one Evaluations queue, where you write feedback, enter a score from 0 to 100, and choose Pass or Revise and resubmit.
Each course can have its own grade scale, from A–F to Distinction, Merit and Pass, and a score fills in the letter. See how to grade and evaluate online coursework and set up your grade scale.
Gating the next lesson on a pass
Tick Required to complete lesson on a quiz, then Require completion before next lesson or the course-wide Require lessons to be completed in order. The next lesson stays locked until the student passes.
Add Quiz Step builds a quiz-only lesson with both switches already on. The course-wide option is explained in require lessons in order.
Certificates
Certificates are issued on completion or, on an evaluated course, when the work passes. You place the student name, course, issuer, date, grade and logo on your own background, per course or as a store default; see course completion certificates on Shopify.
The certificate email attaches the PDF but starts switched off until you tick Enable Email. The Grade element prints the evaluation letter; see add a grade to a certificate and certificates with grades.
Reflections and Shopify Flow
A Reflection Box gives each student a private journal you can reply to. Shopify Flow receives Course quiz graded with the score, attempt number and answers, and a template will email you when a student fails a quiz.
Where Alva Courses falls short
- No certificate verification. Certificates carry no ID, QR code or verification page.
- Quiz scores never print on certificates. The Grade element fills in only on courses with evaluation turned on.
- Three question types. No file upload, matching or ordering questions, and no random draw from a question pool.
- No per-student extra attempt. A staff progress reset gives a fresh start but deletes that student's quiz attempts and evaluations for the course.
- Completion emails follow a passed evaluation. Without evaluation, the certificate email or a Flow workflow does that job.
- No SCORM, xAPI or proctoring.
Courses Plus: the most question types, at a higher price
Courses Plus has the broadest quiz builder of the four as of October 2026: seven question formats, random subsets of questions, multilingual quizzes, SCORM import and certificates verified by QR code. The trade-offs are price and design control. Quizzes start on the $79.99 Professional plan, and custom certificate designs need Enterprise or a paid service.
Its help centre documents single and multiple choice, image choice, fill in the blanks, dropdown, ordering, matching and essay questions, answer explanations, a percentage pass mark, and a set number of questions shown in random order.
Grading written work is lighter. An essay is approved or not approved, and must be the only question in its quiz. Points and written feedback on essays are not documented, and neither are grade scales.
Attempt limits are set per customer, not per quiz. Certificates are issued on completing all lessons, emailed as a PDF, and can carry a QR code that opens a validation page. Expiring continuing-education credits suit CPD sellers.
Stronger than Alva Courses on: question variety, random question subsets, certificate verification, SCORM import and multilingual certificates. For the full picture, see Alva Courses vs Courses Plus.
Tevello: quizzes and editable certificates in one $29 plan
Tevello Courses & Communities includes quizzes and certificates in its single $29-a-month plan as of October 2026. Its help centre documents multiple-choice and open-ended questions, a pass score, a mandatory-quiz setting and a per-course certificate built from editable HTML. Grading of open answers, attempt limits and certificate email are not documented.
A mandatory quiz means members "must complete the quiz before progressing", which says complete, not pass. A Quiz Completed trigger can email you each student's answers, and a Shopify Flow template logs them to Google Sheets.
The certificate is an HTML template edited per course, with dynamic fields and your own background. That gives full layout freedom if you are comfortable with HTML. When it is issued, and whether it is emailed, is not documented.
Stronger than Alva Courses on: community spaces bundled with courses, and a certificate template with no layout limits for anyone who writes HTML. The broader comparison is in Alva Courses vs Tevello.
Inflowkit: simple certificates, little assessment detail
Inflowkit Courses & Membership documents certificates more clearly than assessment. As of October 2026 its website says you can "create online assessments" and "perform automated or manual grading". Its help centre shows a quiz page with questions, choices and media and a setting that limits progress to the next chapter, but not pass marks, scoring or attempts.
Certificates are set up per course with a certificate trigger: you enter the requirements that decide when it is issued, and can turn on an email notification that attaches the PDF. Whether a quiz score counts, or prints, is not documented.
Inflowkit's strengths sit elsewhere: a free Lite plan to start, certificates from the $19 Starter plan, and subscriptions and memberships. If assessment matters, ask for a quiz demo first. The wider comparison is in Alva Courses vs Inflowkit.
Which app is best for which kind of assessed course?
No single app wins every assessment job, so choose by the hardest requirement in your course: written work a person must grade, question variety and verifiable certificates, or a simple quiz-and-certificate bundle. The picks below rely only on features the vendors document as of October 2026.
- Graded written work and certificates that carry a grade: Alva Courses. Per-answer marking, a course-level evaluation with pass or revise, per-course grade scales and the grade printed on a per-course certificate, on both plans from $9.99 a month.
- Question variety, SCORM and verifiable certificates: Courses Plus. Matching, ordering, fill-in-the-blank and random subsets, QR verification and continuing-education credits. Budget for the $79.99 Professional plan, and Enterprise for custom certificate designs.
- Quizzes and certificates alongside a community: Tevello. One $29 plan covers quizzes, an HTML certificate per course and community spaces, which suits cohort-style programmes more than marked coursework.
- A simple completion certificate with memberships: Inflowkit. Certificates start on the $19 Starter plan with subscriptions built in. Ask for a quiz demo first, because its assessment features are not documented in detail.
Whichever you shortlist, test a real assessment in the free trial: a written question, a fail, a retake, a pass and the certificate email. See Alva Courses pricing and the wider best Shopify course apps in 2026.
When you need a full LMS instead
A Shopify course app is the wrong tool when an awarding body dictates how assessment must work. If you need SCORM tracking or xAPI statements, proctored or identity-checked exams, question banks shared across courses, LTI connections to other systems, or audit-ready compliance reports, choose a dedicated learning management system.
- Accredited exams. Regulated qualifications often require invigilation, identity checks and secure question pools. None of the Shopify apps compared here documents proctoring.
- Packaged content. If your course arrives as a SCORM file, check what happens to it. Courses Plus imports SCORM files, but whether it records SCORM scores is not documented. Alva Courses has no SCORM support.
- Employer compliance training. Mandatory training with manager dashboards, recertification cycles and regulator-facing reports is LMS territory.
- Regulated credentials. A QR validation page, as Courses Plus offers, confirms that a certificate was issued. It cannot prove who actually sat the assessment.
A Shopify app still fits when the certificate is your own: a trainer's certificate, a marked portfolio course, CPD evidence learners log themselves, or a staged programme with pass marks. See Shopify course app vs standalone LMS.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on the hardest part of your assessment. As of October 2026, Alva Courses is strongest for grading written work and printing grades on certificates, from $9.99 a month. Courses Plus offers the most question types, SCORM import and QR verification, with quizzes from $79.99. Tevello bundles simpler quizzes and certificates for $29.
Yes, in some apps. Alva Courses sends short and long answers to a review queue where you award points and write feedback, and it can hold the whole course for an evaluation that ends in pass or revise. Courses Plus has an approval step for essay answers. Tevello and Inflowkit do not document how written answers are graded.
In Alva Courses, yes, on courses that use evaluation: add the Grade element to the certificate design and the letter from the passed evaluation prints where you placed it. Quiz scores alone never print. Courses Plus, Tevello and Inflowkit do not document printing a grade or score on a certificate.
Yes. Each quiz has a Max Attempts setting, unlimited by default or a number you choose, alongside a passing score and an optional time limit. When a student runs out of attempts, a staff progress reset gives a fresh start, but it also deletes that student's quiz attempts and evaluations for the course.
Only with some apps. Courses Plus can print a QR code that opens a validation page showing the student, the course and whether the certificate is valid. Alva Courses certificates carry no ID or verification page, and Tevello and Inflowkit do not document verification.
Often, yes. If an awarding body requires proctored exams, identity checks, SCORM tracking or audit-ready compliance reports, a dedicated learning management system is the safer choice. A Shopify course app suits certificates you issue yourself, marked portfolio courses and staged programmes with pass marks.
