Let students reset their progress

Alva Courses can let students restart a course on their own. Add a Reset Progress block to a lesson, and a student who wants a second pass can clear their completed lessons and start again from the first lesson, while their quiz results and completion record are kept.

How the Reset Progress block works

The Reset Progress block is the switch for student resets. Placing it in a lesson turns them on for that course, and deleting it turns them off. There is no course setting and no per-student setting. A student reset clears completed lessons, the progress percentage and video resume positions. It never changes access.

To reset a student yourself, or to compare the two kinds of reset, see Reset or fix student progress.

Add the block

  1. In the Shopify admin, open Alva Courses, choose the course, and open the lesson where students should find the block, such as the final lesson.
  2. Choose Add Content → Reset Progress. The block is available in both the course builder and the lesson editor.
  3. Optionally fill in Title (up to 120 characters), Description (up to 500) and Button text (up to 80). Leave a field empty to show the default wording in the student's language.
  4. Save the lesson, then preview it. In a preview you can open the confirmation but not confirm it.

By default the card is titled Start the course again, explains that the student's completed lessons will be cleared, and shows a Reset progress button. The block's info panel in the editor repeats what is cleared and what is kept.

What students see

When a student clicks the button, a Reset your progress? confirmation opens. It says their completed lessons and progress will be cleared, that their quiz results, reflections and comments are kept, and that quiz attempts already used still count toward any attempt limit.

If the student can currently download a certificate, the confirmation also offers Download certificate, because the certificate becomes available again only when they finish the course again. After they confirm, they see Progress reset and the course reopens at the first lesson. Lessons that must be completed in order lock again.

When students can't reset

The button is disabled, with a short note explaining why, in these cases:

A student can reset a course once every 10 minutes, and no more than 5 times an hour. If they try sooner, they are told how many minutes to wait. A student whose access has expired or been revoked can't reset.

What a reset clears and keeps

A student reset clears only that student's completed lessons, progress percentage and video resume positions in the course. Everything graded or earned stays:

If progress tags are on for the course, a reset moves the student back to the not-started tag, which can re-enter them into automations or email flows that use it. Every reset is listed in the Progress resets card on the student's member page.

Turn student resets off

Delete every Reset Progress block from the course's lessons and save. Students can then no longer reset that course themselves. Resets that already happened stay in place, and you can still reset a student from their member page.

Common questions

Can students retake quizzes after a reset?

Only if they have attempts left. A reset keeps quiz attempts and results, so attempts already used still count toward any attempt limit. Earlier passes still count too, so a quiz the student already passed doesn't stop them completing its lesson again.

Will a student get a second certificate email?

No. A reset keeps the original completion date and the record of the certificate already sent, so finishing the course again doesn't send another certificate email. The student can download their certificate again once they finish.

Can I stop one student from resetting?

No. There is no per-student setting. Every student who can open the lesson can use the block, within its limits. To stop student resets for everyone, delete the block from the course.

Can a student reset be undone?

No. There is no undo for a reset. To see what was cleared, open the student's member page and check the Progress resets card, which shows their completed lessons and progress just before each reset.
