How it works
The course page is a Shopify customer account extension named Alva Courses. It stays out of your customer accounts until you add it in Shopify's checkout and accounts editor, where its settings live too. Alva Courses then shows whether it is in place in Settings → Extensions.
Install and verify the page
1. Open the installation instructions
In Alva Courses, click Settings, open the Extensions tab and click Installation Instructions. The first section, Alva Courses Extension, is the customer account page. The other two extensions below it are covered in Thank-you and order-status extensions.
2. Open Shopify's checkout and accounts editor
Click Install Alva Courses Extension. Shopify's checkout and accounts editor opens in a new browser tab; keep the Alva Courses tab open for the status check.
3. Add the Alva Courses page and save
In the editor, select the Alva Courses page, add it to customer accounts and click Save. Shopify also prompts you to add a link to the page to your customer account menu: accept it so signed-in students can find it.
4. Choose how the page works
With the page selected in the editor, set Page Type: redirect shows a Go to my courses button that opens your storefront courses page, while inline lists a card for each course inside the account.
| Setting | Choices | If left empty |
|---|---|---|
| Page Type | redirect, inline | redirect |
| Progress Bar | show, hide | show |
| Image aspect ratio | 1:1, 3:4, 4:3, 16:9 | 1:1 |
| Image fit | cover, contain | cover |
The other three settings only change inline cards. Click Save in the editor after any change; nothing needs updating in Alva Courses.
5. Add the menu link if you skipped it
If you dismissed Shopify's prompt, go to Content → Menus in the Shopify admin, open the menu you want the link in (your customer account menu or your storefront main menu) and click Add menu item. Give it a name, choose Customer accounts → Apps → Alva Courses as the link and save the menu.
6. Confirm the status in Settings → Extensions
Back in the Alva Courses tab, open Settings → Extensions and click Refresh Status. Under Installation Status, Customer Account Extension should show a ✓ badge and Installed - Customers can access courses from their account.
Read the status check
The status check asks Shopify whether the Alva Courses page is placed in your customer accounts. It runs by itself when you open Settings → Extensions, and Last checked shows when it last ran.
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| ✓ Installed - Customers can access courses from their account | The page is added in the editor. |
| ✗ Not installed - Required for customer course access | Shopify doesn't report the page yet. |
| Checking extension status... | A check is running. |
| Using cached data - could not connect to Shopify | Shopify couldn't be reached, so the last result saved in this browser is shown. |
The dashboard's Extension Status card shows the same result, and Installation Instructions adds an Installed badge beside Alva Courses Extension.
If it still says Not installed
A ✗ after Refresh Status means Shopify doesn't see the page yet. Reopen the editor with Install Alva Courses Extension, confirm the Alva Courses page is added, click Save and refresh the status again.
If the editor won't add the page, check under Settings → Customer accounts in the Shopify admin that your store uses new customer accounts. Until it does, link students to your storefront courses page: see Add a courses page to your theme.
If you see Using cached data - could not connect to Shopify, reload Alva Courses from your Shopify admin and click Refresh Status.
What learners see
Signed-in students follow the menu link to My Courses. With redirect they get a Go to my courses button; with inline, a card per course with Continue or Start Course. To change that wording, see Customise storefront text.
Common questions
Do students need this page to reach their courses?
No. Students can also open courses from your storefront courses page at yourstore.com/apps/alva/courses, and from the access link in an enrolment email if you send them. The customer account page adds a My Courses page inside the Shopify account they already use.
Why does the status say installed when students can't find the page?
The status check only confirms that the Alva Courses page has been added in the checkout and accounts editor. It doesn't look at your menus, so if students can't see the page, add a link to it under Content → Menus in the Shopify admin.
Does the page work with legacy customer accounts?
No. Shopify only runs customer account extensions on new customer accounts, so the page can't appear on legacy account pages. Switch the store to new customer accounts, or link students to your storefront courses page instead.
Can I preview the page in the editor?
Yes. With Page Type set to inline, the editor preview shows two example courses called Example Course and Getting Started Guide, so you can check the card layout and image aspect ratio. With redirect, it shows the Go to my courses button.
