What this workflow does
This workflow adds the Shopify customer tag course-completed to a student as soon as Alva Courses reports that they completed a course. The tag is the same for every course, so one customer segment finds all of your graduates, whichever course they took.
Completed has a precise meaning: the student finished every lesson, passed any quizzes the course requires and, on a course that needs an instructor’s evaluation, had their coursework passed. Every field Course completed carries is listed in Shopify Flow triggers and their fields.
Build the workflow
1. Create a workflow with the Course completed trigger
In the Shopify admin, open Apps, then Flow, and click Create workflow. Click Select a trigger, find Alva Courses and choose Course completed. The trigger’s customer is the student who finished the course.
2. Add the Add customer tags action
Add an action after the trigger and choose Add customer tags. Flow takes the customer from the trigger, so the only field to fill in is Tags.
3. Enter the tag
In Tags, enter course-completed. Shopify customer tags are not case sensitive, so Course-Completed counts as the same tag.
4. Name the workflow and turn it on
Name the workflow Tag customers who complete a course and click Turn on workflow. Alva Courses only sends Course completed to Flow while a turned-on workflow uses it, so nothing is tagged before this step.
Test the workflow
Test with a short free course. Sign in to your storefront as a test customer, enrol, and complete every lesson. Then open Customers in the Shopify admin, find the test customer and check that course-completed is among their tags.
No tag? In Alva Courses, open Settings → Integrations → Shopify Flow. Course completed should show an In use badge, and Flow activity should list the event under Triggers sent. In Shopify Flow, the workflow’s recent runs show whether the tag step ran.
Tag graduates of one course only
To tag graduates of a single course, add a condition between the trigger and the action: Course ID is equal to that course’s Flow ID, for example 42. Give the tag the course’s name, such as completed-watercolour-101, so each course gets its own segment.
Alva Courses lists every course’s Flow ID under Settings → Integrations → Shopify Flow, in the Course IDs for Flow table, with a copy button for each. The same number appears as Flow ID on each course’s Settings tab.
If per-course tags are all you need, Alva Courses can do it without Flow. Progress tags keep a not-started, in-progress or completed tag on every student of a course and swap it as they move along.
Things to know before you rely on the tag
Earlier graduates are not tagged. The workflow reacts to completions from the moment it is turned on. Find students who finished before then on the Members page or in a members export, and tag them in Shopify yourself.
The tag stays. Nothing removes course-completed later, even if the student’s access expires or is revoked. A segment on the tag is a list of people who finished a course, not of people who can still open it.
A repeat completion is harmless. If you reset a student’s progress and they finish the course again, Course completed fires again. Adding a tag the customer already has changes nothing.
Do more when a student completes a course
The same trigger can start more steps. Add Alva Courses’ Enroll customer in course action to give graduates your follow-on course automatically; every Alva action is described in Shopify Flow actions. To thank graduates by email, see Send a Shopify Email when a student completes a course.
